Paul Ryan: A Speaker in review
When
former House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) made the announcement in September
2015 that he was resigning, Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) didn't seek to replace
him. He didn't ask to be House Speaker.
At least
not at first.
Paul
Ryan had to be convinced to accept the nomination for Speaker of the House. His
fellow Republicans asked him to run for House Speaker, and he finally agreed.
And now he's the unifying leader of the Republican Party.
Ryan
didn’t seek his position as leader of the House Republicans, but he stepped up
into his role like a real man.
That
statement is bold, but it's true. Ryan was the only person able to unify the
different factions within the Republican Party. Yes, Ryan had his work cut out
for him. He still does. But he's worked hard to unify a frayed party.
Now
let's look at some of the things Paul Ryan has accomplished in his two-and-a-half
years as House Speaker.
1) Paul Ryan is a pro-life
conservative Catholic.
If you
are like me, you probably never heard of Rep. Paul Ryan from Wisconsin until
the 2012 Presidential Election, when he was nominated as the Republican
candidate for Vice President.
Now, a
lot of people know him. Paul Ryan is a Catholic. He is also strongly pro-life.
During the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate, Ryan explains his pro-life
views and how his Catholic faith has formed him.
And at
the 2018 March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., on January 19, Paul Ryan
addressed the crowd after President Donald Trump gave his speech to the men and
women in attendance. Ryan was optimistic and encouraged them, stating that “the
pro-life movement is on the rise” because so many young men and women in
America were at the March for Life and are pro-life.
Ryan
reached out to Americans of all ages, and they support the pro-life movement.
2) He is “getting along” with
President Trump
You
can argue all you want about President Trump butting heads with Congressional
and Senate Republicans, particularly with Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker Paul Ryan.
That
At the
2018 March for Life, Speaker Ryan encouraged Americans to thank God that the
United States once again has a pro-life President in Donald Trump.
“We
strive to make our time in Congress a March for Life in itself,” Ryan said at the 2018 March
for Life. “We strive to fight for the unborn, to pass important pro-life
legislation through Congress, to work with the Trump administration to pass
pro-life policies and laws. And we’re making a lot of progress.”
Speaker
Ryan further stated
that the U.S. House of Representatives had passed bills that defund Planned
Parenthood and protect unborn children after 20 weeks of gestation in the womb.
Ryan’s
relationship with President Trump also saw the House and Senate passing
a tax reform bill in December 2017, after a year of battling for tax cuts.
This new bill gives tax cuts to middle and working class Americans so that they
have more money in their pockets. It also reformed the tax code in the United
States.
Ryan
would have had a hard time passing the tax cuts if Hillary Clinton had been
elected instead of Trump.
Today,
March 20, Paul Ryan introduced President Trump at the National Republican
Congressional Committee (NRCC) Dinner in Washington, D.C.
Ryan
told the crowd that “this new Republican government” is keeping its promises to
the American people, working to advance “their agenda to help more Americans
reach new heights” (“The Story with Martha MacCallum,” Fox News Channel, March
20, 2018).
Ryan
used the United States growing economy and job market as an example and
encouraged his fellow Republicans to help Americans build more confidence in
themselves.
“We
need to sell this message. We have upended the status quo in such profound ways
that we are actually improving things for our constituents,” Ryan said (“The
Story with Martha MacCallum,” Fox News Channel, March 20, 2018). “At the end of
the day, that is why we are in these jobs. [. . .] We will empower people with
the freedom and ability to reach their full potential. That is what the
Republican Party stands for, that is what our agenda is, and that is what is
happen in America.”
Paul
Ryan has demonstrated that he is fit for his role as House Speaker. He didn't
ask for the leadership position he's in, but he rose up to the challenge,
answering his call to step up and be a man.
He is
a good man.
That
is what each young man is called to do, whether they went to Benedictine
College or not: to try hard to be better, improve yourself everyday, and just
be yourself: a good man.
Be who
you are called to be.
