Ireland: The Next Rebellion
In 1916,
Irish nationalists started the Easter Rebellion as a sign of Irish's
strong determination against British tyranny. While they failed, their sacrifice
eventually led to the formation of the Republic of Ireland and an end to
British rule over the Irish.
Now, a
hundred-and-two years later, another dictatorship threatens to enslave the
Irish people again.
Six days from now, the people of the
Republic of Ireland will vote on whether to repeal or
keep Ireland's Eighth Amendment on May 25. This law makes abortion
illegal in Ireland by recognizing “the equal
right to life of the mother and the unborn child,” except in certain cases when
the mother’s life is in danger, according
to the National Catholic Register.
Already, people
have come forward supporting repeal of the Eighth Amendment, including
the music band U2. Others have organized
a day of prayer for Ireland on May 13, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima, in support of the Eighth Amendment.
My family mostly
comes from Irish and German descent. They came to the United States to start a
new life for themselves and to escape Bismarck in Germany. They came here so
that they can be free, not to serve oppressors.
I am proud of my
Irish heritage. That's why Ireland should keep their pro-life Eighth
Amendment. Catholicism and a pro-life culture is Ireland’s identity. The Irish
have suffered for over five hundred years of ethnic and religious persecution
under British rule—people who hated the Irish and their Roman Catholic
faith.
Ireland's Eighth
Amendment is a model the United States could use for a federal pro-life law.
Already, States are taking action when it comes to making abortion illegal in
this country. These states are working at the state and local level to enact
pro-life legislation that limits abortion in their own states, including Iowa’s
“Heartbeat Bill.” This recent law passed by Iowa bans almost all abortions
after the sixth week of pregnancy. It also faces legal threats from the
ACLU and Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States.
President Donald
Trump is also working for pro-life legislation by defunding Planned Parenthood.
On May 18, his administration announced
they are bringing back a Reagan-era rule that bans federally funded family
planning clinics from counseling women to consider abortion as an option. While
the new rule doesn’t defund Planned Parenthood entirely, it does mean taxpayer
dollars can’t be used for abortions, including ones provided by Planned
Parenthood.
The battle over
Ireland’s Eighth Amendment is a fight for Ireland’s soul. We don't need
socialists and abortionists taking away Ireland's right to life and to
protect unborn children. Half the people will vote to keep Ireland a pro-life
Catholic country, and the other will vote to turn Ireland into a Socialist
society.
The people
of Ireland must vote to retain the Eighth Amendment. Irish Catholics
must make sure their country stays pro-life and ask for God's mercy and
grace. Otherwise, the next counterrevolution will be to
reclaim Ireland's Catholic and pro-life identity.
Erin Go Bragh!
