Star Wars: The Bad Batch - Episode Two review
If you think parenting is easy in a Galaxy Far, Far Away, see what Hunter and the Bad Batch have to deal with when “raising” Omega.
Whereas Din Djarin of “The Mandalorian” had to take care of an infant Baby Yoda (Grogu, as he is called), Hunter and the Bad Batch have to deal with an adolescent female clone.
In Episode Two, titled “Cut and Run,” Hunter and Omega develop their growing father-daughter figure dynamic.
After successfully fleeing Kamino and the Empire, Hunter and his team make their escape to the planet Saleucami.
Omega, who spent her entire life on the ocean and rainy world of Kamino, has never seen grass, sunshine, and dirt before. These everyday things that we (and the Bad Batch) take for granted are Christmas and Easter morning rolled into one for the young female clone.
On Saleucami, Hunter and the Bad Batch meet up with Cut Lawquane, a Clone trooper who deserted the Old Republic during the Clones Wars, and has lived peacefully with his wife and two children.
Seeing Cut and his family makes Hunter think Omega should have a chance at a normal life. His beliefs are reinforced after they save Omega from a wild animal near Cut’s farm.
Hunter is harsh with Omega, but guidance from Cut makes him realize that Omega isn’t a soldier. He accepts it. He thinks it’s best if Omega leaves with Cut’s family for a new life because he and his team can’t give Ormga the life she deserves.
After all, she’s still just a kid.
The situation on Saleucami escalates as the Empire tightens its grip on the planet, forcing citizens to register their ships and to receive “chain codes,” which will allow citizens to travel offworld.
It is part of the Empire’s efforts to expand their power and control over their own citizens throughout the galaxy.
These chain codes can be seen as “Covid vaccination passports” or “federal gun registration” efforts, which are being pushed by airlines, businesses and liberal progressives in order to regulate everyday people.
Without chain codes, Cut and the Bad Batch would be recognized as Clone deserters and be imprisoned by the Empire.
Hunter, Tech, and the others devise a plan to copy Imperial Chain Codes so that Cut’s family can escape offworld without a problem.
They succeed, but Hunter insists on Omega going with the family. Much like Din Djarin to Grogu, Hunter has grown fond of Omega and it hurts for them to go their separate ways, even though in Hunter’s case he is leaving Omega with his friends and not Imperials.
Omega then returns and escapes with the Bad Batch from the Imperial Clone Troopers.
Hunter and Omega tell each other that they both want her to stay with the Bad Batch, showing that the two of them have grown very fond of each other as father and daughter figures.
