Reflections on the NFL 2024 season: Weeks 4 and 5 in review
The Dallas Cowboys showed they need improvement, but they were able to beat the New York Giants 20-15 on Thursday, September 26t, with only a short week to prepare for them. But their effort was just enough to beat their division rivals.
Dak Prescott’s two touchdown passes and kicker Brandon Aubrey’s two field goals were just what they needed to beat Daniel Jones and this Giants team as the Cowboys move up to a 2-2 record as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5 after their mini-bye.
Despite dealing with a one hour and twenty-five minute rain delay, along with suffering injuries on their defense which included Micah Parsons, the Cowboys managed to overcome the Steelers and win 20-17. They now improve to 3-2 following Week Five, staying in the race against the 4-1 Washington Commanders in the NFC East.
The Kansas City Chiefs showed that they are still putting on close games against their opponents in a tight Week Four matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite their struggles, they came back and overcame them on their way to a 17-10 victory and a 4-0 record on top of the AFC West.
They then gave a dominant performance against the struggling New Orleans Saints,
Meanwhile, the Houston Texans bounced back after an embarrassing loss to the Vikings, pulling off a comeback win against the Jacksonville Jaguars to improve to 3-1. They then managed to prevent the Buffalo Bills from completing a comeback in Week Five, winning 23-20 and improving to a 4-1 record.
Other teams, on the other hand, showed they have a lot of struggles.
The Arizona Cardinals fell to 1-3 after a blowout 42-14 loss to the Washington Commanders, and the Carolina Panthers couldn’t beat the Cincinnati Bengals, also falling to 1-3 while handing the Bengals their first win of the season. The Panthers’ troubles continued after they lost to the Chicago Bears in Week Five, falling to 1-4 and last place in the NFC South.
As it turns out, it wasn’t just Bryce Young. The entire Panthers organization needs help.
The 3-2 Bears look like a different team and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has improved a lot since his terrible start in Week 1.
Other teams that fell to 1-4 records are the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Rams, the Carolina Panthers, and the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars improved to 1-4 after winning their first game this season against the Indianapolis Colts.
If these teams can’t improve in the next few weeks, they could very well face elimination from the playoffs.
Sometimes teams are also funny hard to break away on their past to clinch their division titles.
The Seattle Seahawks lost 29-20 against the New York Giants, falling to 3-2 while holding only a one-game lead over the Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers lost 24-23 to the Cardinals, stunning the football world with their 2-3 record as a result of injuries to star players like Christian McCaffrey.
It will be hard for the 49ers to win the NFC West unless they are fully healthy.
The NFC South also looks primed for a 10 division showdown, as the Atlanta Falcons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the New Orleans Saints are all keeping pace with each other. given their division’s history, it could go down to the last week in the regular season before a team clenches the NFC South.
The Saints and New York Jets are struggling, falling to 2-3 records as the Saints lost three games in a row and the Jets hired their head coach, Robert Saleh.
After a chaotic Week 5, the only unbeaten teams left are the Chiefs and the Vikings.
